Broncos vs. Chiefs Odds, Spread, Preview: NFL Week 17 Predictions

Broncos vs. Chiefs Week 17 matchup preview and current betting lines

The Denver Broncos (4-11) are the latest team to fire their head coach (Nathaniel Hackett) during the season, and one of the very few to do it during his first year on the job. But Hackett was that bad, and now the Broncos have their work cut out for them against a Kansas City Chiefs (12-3) team that has won 14 straight games against them.

It looks like that streak will have to wait for next year to snap, but the Chiefs cannot take this game lightly at home with the No. 1 seed still very much in play if they win out. The Broncos were down 27-0 in Week 14 when they played before rallying to within 34-28 in the final minutes. Backup Brett Rypien threw an interception after Russell Wilson, who played his most inspired game of the season, left with a concussion after banging his head off the ground following a scramble.

The Broncos intercepted Patrick Mahomes three times that day, which tied his career high. It also diminished his standing in the MVP odds for the time being, but he has since regained the lead with Jalen Hurts’ injury in Philadelphia. Mahomes just has to get through these last two games with solid performances and certainly wins to hold off any late push from Joe Burrow or Josh Allen, who play each other Monday night in a huge game for No. 1 seed implications.

But the Broncos certainly come in wounded after a 51-14 loss to a Rams team that was missing several of its best players. We’ll see if the Broncos have any fight left with Hackett already gone.

The NFL Week 17 odds have the Chiefs as a 12.5-point home favorite with a total of 44.5 points.

Players to watch in the Broncos vs. Chiefs game

Denver Broncos

Jerry Jeudy: Of course Jeudy would stand up for Russell Wilson this week. Jeudy is one of the few bright spots in this offense, so the quarterback struggles have not affected him that much. Jeudy is averaging 60.0 yards per game and 9.1 yards per target – both career highs. Jeudy caught three touchdowns against the Chiefs in Week 14, his best game in the NFL. We’ll see what he has left for an encore as the only reliable target left in the passing offense.

Kansas City Chiefs

Jerick McKinnon: He has scored five of the last 11 touchdowns for the Chiefs this season. He even has a receiving touchdown in four straight games. McKinnon had 112 receiving yards and two touchdowns against Denver in Week 14. The Chiefs just keep finding the open options each week, and McKinnon has been the hot hand in the last month. He should be on Denver’s radar this time.

Our Best NFL Bets for the Broncos vs. Chiefs game

We have two NFL Week 17 predictions for this AFC West rematch.

Broncos vs. Chiefs Point Spread Pick: Chiefs -12.5 (-110)

The Broncos vs. Chiefs spread opened with the Chiefs as a 10-point home favorite before moving up to 12.5 points after news that Hackett was out as head coach. Jerry Rosburg, a 67-year-old special teams coordinator will serve as the interim coach for Denver.

Everything about Week 14 makes you a little nervous about trusting the Chiefs to cover a big spread again after nearly blowing a 27-0 lead. But it is very unlikely that Mahomes will throw three picks again, or that Jeudy will catch three touchdowns again. The Broncos look checked out after that 51-14 drubbing at the hands of the Bizarro Rams on Christmas. What is adding an inexperienced interim coach going to do to help matters?

Plus, the Chiefs still have so much to play for with a chance at the No. 1 seed by winning out and getting the Bengals to beat the Bills on Monday night. They have to keep playing starters hard in these games. They also need to clean up a sloppy offensive performance last week where it was looking like Mahomes wouldn’t reach 200 yards passing until some late completions to Travis Kelce led to another touchdown. It was the first game all season where the Chiefs did not have 300 yards of offense.

And yet, they beat the Seahawks 24-10 because the defense played as well as it has all season. The defense needs to keep playing improved football with the playoffs nearly here. Beating up on a bad Denver defense would help.

The Chiefs are 5-5 ATS as a favorite of 12-plus points in the Mahomes era. With Denver looking like a team ready for 2023, we’ll take a game similar to Week 14 minus the big comeback attempt from the Broncos. The Chiefs will win by two touchdowns to cover and win a 15th in a row against Denver for your NFL bet of the week. Then they will rest up and see what happens Monday night in Cincinnati.

Chiefs Prop: Travis Kelce Anytime Touchdown Scorer (-115)

Can Jerick McKinnon and Mahomes stop hogging up all the touchdowns, please? McKinnon keeps catching them through the air, and Mahomes has ran in three scores in the last month.

This needs to be another big game for Travis Kelce, who has not scored a touchdown in the last four games. The only time Kelce and Mahomes went five games without a touchdown together was in 2019, but in that fifth game in Denver, Mahomes dislocated his kneecap in the second quarter and left the game early. So, we have never seen this duo play five straight full games without scoring a touchdown together.

Kelce still leads the NFL in receiving touchdowns with 12, though he is tied with Davante Adams at the moment. Maybe he has some contract bonuses if he leads the league outright, so that could be a nice incentive for him to score in front of the home crowd this week. Plus, he’s just that good of a weapon in the red zone. McKinnon can’t keep scoring every touchdown for this team. Let’s roll with Kelce to break the drought.
