What happened to the Lakers?

The Los Angeles Lakers went all in coming into this season after last year’s early playoff exit to the Phoenix Suns. The Lakers management wasted no time as the off-season started and tried to surround LeBron James with as much talent as possible in order to use his last couple of years to win another championship for the “purple and gold”.

On the very first day of the trade market, the Lakers brought in the former MVP Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards. Carmelo Anthony, one of the top 10 all-time leading scorers and the three-time Defensive player of the Year Dwight Howard signed as free agents.

That roster looked scary and was considered the top favorite to win the NBA championship despite the fact that they were the oldest team in the league.

Things didn’t start well for them, Anthony Davis got hurt, coach Frank Vogel was still setting up the roles and a slow start of a new roster was expected.

As the season progressed nothing much was changed. Russell Westbrook was unrecognizable, very often the worst player on the team which made coach Vogel to bench him in the last quarters of tight games.

Anyway, everybody thought that LeBron James will take the team on his back, boost everybody up and the Lakers will finally climb the Western Conference standings. Individually James plays like in his prime as he is the NBA’s leading scorer with 30.3 points on 52.4% shooting from the field and 35.9% from the three-point territory.

Many find an excuse in Anthony Davis’ injury but the team was losing even when he was in the lineup. And as everybody were waiting for the Lakers rise, they fell even deeper. Not that they didn’t make it to the top 6 teams in the conference, they sank even deeper and now their chances for the playoffs are at the lowest point as they are currently 11th in the standings, two games behind the San Antonio Spurs with only four games left in the regular season.

How can the Lakers make it to the play-in?

To make things even worse for the Lakers, the Spurs are holding the tie-breaker against them and the Lakers are playing three of the top six teams in the conference – the Suns, Warriors and Nuggets and the Thunder who defeated them twice this season.

So, in order for the Lakers to make it to the play-in tournament, they need to win all four remaining games and the Spurs need to lose at least three of their four which they play against the Nuggets, Timberwolves, Warriors and Mavericks.

Yes, there is still hope Lakers fans, but with the way the team played all season long, they will drop from the play-in conversation even before the last game of the regular season comes.

So, the Lakers tonight will visit the Phoenix Suns, the team with the best overall record in the league and a 31-8 record at home. LeBron James is listed as questionable for this game because of his ankle injury but even with him in the lineup, the Lakers’ chances to win in Phoenix are minimal.
