The Belmont Stakes – race history

As we have mentioned previously, the Belmont Stakes is a race that goes back quite some way. In fact, the race dates back all the way to 1867, meaning that this will be the 154th installment of the Belmont Stakes. As it happens, the early Belmont Stakes races were held at a racetrack by the name of Jerome Park Racetrack, in the Bronx. The racetrack was built around the same time that the race was initiated, and since it was financed by a man named August Belmont Sr, the race took its name from this.

With this said, the emergence of the Triple Crown didn’t occur until much later – not until 1930 to be exact. This is when the Belmont Stakes really took flight, and it has evolved to become one of the most famous races in horse racing. Just how famous you ask? Well, the Belmont Stakes 2022 will have a prize purse of $1.5 million, making it rank as one of the most lucrative races in North America and indeed the world. We’ve seen some pretty significant achievements at the Belmont Stakes in the past too.

The fastest runner we’ve ever witnessed was a horse by the name of ‘Tiz The Law’, which occurred in 2020. With a time of 1:46.53, this was the fastest time by more than 20 seconds! However, the track was shortened in 2020 to 1 mile and 1/8 which makes the record a little skewed. As for the biggest margin of victory, this came via the legendary Secretariat horse. Amazingly, the winning distance was 31 lengths here, achieved by Secretariat back in 1973.

Belmont Stakes 2022 horses and the influence of other Triple Crown events

At the time of writing, the Belmont Stakes 2022 lineup hasn’t been announced. In fact, it won’t be announced until June 7th, which is just a few days before the Belmont Stakes 2022 race is scheduled. Then again, this is fairly common with all of the Triple Crown events, so this isn’t entirely surprising. However, just because the line-up hasn’t been announced, this doesn’t mean that you can’t bet on Belmont Stakes. The ante-post markets are already open for business, and we’ve got the odds for the top horses in Belmont Stakes below.

But first, let us provide you with an overview of how the Triple Crown events influenced the Belmont Stakes. It goes without saying that horses who do well in the first two races will usually be heavily favored to do well at the Belmont Stakes too. All of the Triple Crown races are pretty similar, which makes it easier to predict which horses will do well based on previous performances, of course. Then again, not all of the Belmont Stakes 2022 horses will have competed in both of the previous Triple Crown races.

This makes the Belmont Stakes 2022 lineup all the more fascinating. And this brings us to our final bit of information – the Belmont Stakes 2022 horses and their respective ante-post odds. We’ve listed the top three for you right here:

Mo Donegal: +350 odds

Mo Donegal is actually listed as the favorite at many sportsbooks to win the Belmont Stakes 2022. This horse managed to achieve a fifth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, which was fairly impressive to see. But he has also beaten top horses like Early Voting and Zandon in other races this year too. So this has obviously had a major impact on the odds for him to win this year.

We the People: +500 odds

We the People didn’t actually compete in the Kentucky Derby, and he isn’t down to compete in the Preakness Stakes either. This then begs the question – why is he one of the favorites to win the Belmont Stakes 2022? Well, the main reason is that We the People has won two out of his three races this season.

Epicenter: +600 odds

If you are worried about your Belmont Stakes 2022 payout, then this final horse might put your worries to rest. Epicenter should really be a red-hot favorite to win the Belmont Stakes, but he is down at +600 odds. However, he finished 2nd in the Kentucky Derby and he is a favorite to win the Preakness Stakes. If he does indeed win the Preakness Stakes, these odds will climb much higher!
