How do the 2022 NBA Playoffs Work?

The 2022 NBA Playoffs are fast approaching after the long 82-game schedule comes to an end April 10th. The regular season was as entertaining as any over the last few years. Without superteams dominating the headlines, it was refreshing to see a variety of teams enjoying quality stretches of play and jostling for position.

Both the Western Conference and Eastern Conference are seeing daily movement in the seeding. While the final standings get settled, we’ll give a complete rundown on how the 2022 NBA Playoffs work.

How do the NBA Playoffs Work?

The Eastern and Western Conference playoffs consist of multiple series that are determined by seeding. There are 16 teams total, with the eight best from each conference seeded by winning percentages. The better the win-loss record in the regular season, the higher the seeding within their respective conference.

Each series features a best-of-seven game format. The first team to reach four wins moves ahead into the next round for a new opponent. This continues three rounds against a conference foe until the NBA Finals.

A new feature was implemented before the 2020-2021 season where the top six seeds were guaranteed to make the playoffs without further participation. But the seventh and eighth seeds had to compete in a Play-In Tournament with their ninth and 10th seeds.

What is the Play-In Tournament?

The NBA wanted to spice up the first round of the playoffs after seeing mild interest from fans for the last decade. Most first round series are blowouts and inconsequential. The Play-In Tournament was a way to give teams that may have suffered major injuries the chance to earn one more shot to make it into the postseason.

There are six Play-In games in what is essentially a combination of a single- and double-elimination format. The seventh and eighth seed play once and the winner immediately locks into the seventh seed.

The loser plays the winner of the game between the ninth and 10th seed. That winner grabs the eight seed.

The loser of the ninth and 10th seed game is eliminated immediately. The loser of the game between the seven-eight game and the winner of the nine-10 game is also sent home.

When do the 2022 NBA Playoffs Start?

The Play-In Tournament begins on April 12 and ends April 15. The next day, April 16, tips off the 2022 NBA Playoffs. For now, the only other date we know is that the NBA Finals begins on June 2 with Game 1.

See our page with the Tournament schedule for more detailed series information.
